Blogs VS Social Networks

May 30th, 2007 — 02:55 pm

Kent Newsome wrote a post detailing his disgust from MySpace. Ayelet wrote a reply in which she claimed MySpace has it’s uses.
I tend to agree with Kent.

Blogging takes effort, time and at least a little talent.
MySpace requires choosing a template.
Blogging is about sharing your view, opinions and (some times) personal life with your readers.
MySpace is about sharing links to your “friends”, meaning other pages in which the only meaningful data is links to more “friends” and so on.
(Why do I use quotes? ask Samy)

If a blog is the equivalent of an autobiography, MySpace page is the equivalent of a phone book.

Energizer chose the wrong mascot

May 30th, 2007 — 02:26 pm

It’s 12:30AM, and after walking several miles, running like crazy in the yard, and playing for an hour, my dog is still busy chasing it’s tail or trying to dig through the floor.

If only I had that amount of energy…..

How to write bad code using 1000 gnomes

May 30th, 2007 — 01:37 pm

A very long hallway has 1000 doors numbered 1 to 1000; all doors are initially closed. One by one, 1000 people go down the hall: the first person opens each door, the second person closes all doors with even numbers, the third person closes door 3, opens door 6, closes door 9, opens door 12, etc. That is, the n th person changes all doors whose numbers are divisible by n . After all 1000 people have gone down the hall, which doors are open and which are closed?

How many times you had an interview in which you were given questions like this one?
And how many times you have an interview in which you were asked to solve real problems the development in the hiring company had?

Which hiring company would you like better?

Developers are smart people, don’t expect them to take you seriously if you throw logic riddles at them instead of really testing their programming skills.
Let the interviewee solve actual problems - a good developer will enjoy the challenge and will show it.

(The title of the post is based on the hebrew version of the riddle above, in which “people” were replaced by “gnomes” or “dwarves”. I wonder if this tell you something about the Israeli culture)

Set the maximum attachment size for work items

May 29th, 2007 — 02:34 pm

By default Team System limits the size of work items attachments to 4mb.
This can be rather limiting some times, requiring use of compression utilities and other “hacks”.
I have ran into a Martin Woodward’s post point to this MSDN artical, showing how to change this limit.

Censorship threat to Israeli web

May 29th, 2007 — 05:10 am

The ultra-religious party Shas is currently trying to pass a new law, aimed to censor sites containing “harmful content” to only consenting adults will be able to view them.

How? By forcing ISPs to block those sites, unless the surfer is identified by biometric means.
Who will decide what is considered “harmful” and who will own the huge database of resulting biometric personal data? Good question.

And the most frightening thing is the fact most of the public is completely complacent to this danger. I have had the chance of to see comments like “no way they are going to pass that, nothing to worry about” in political forums, and it’s alarming.
Edmund Burke said: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing”. This is very true in the fractured Israeli political system.

Fortunately, some bloggers are aware to the danger, leading to posts from Ayelet Noff (Blonde 2.0) and Jeff Pulver, as well as an excellent site from Hanad Cohen.
